Long Way To Be Happy

Darlene Love

June 1965

Gold Star Studios, LA

Unreleased in the US

Engineer: Larry Levine

Arranger: Jack Nitzsche

This song ran for nearly four minutes when released. This was much too long by contemporary AM standards by Spector refused to cut it shorter. Instead, on the label where the time indicated, he had printed “3:05” while the track actually ran 3:46. He also added a false ending which made the recording more dramatic, but also tricked the deejays into thinking it was a shorter song. More details here.

Another fine Spector-Mann-Weil composition.

This song became a favorite of Spector's having heard the 1958 Sam Cooke version. It was the "B" side to "Ebb Tide".

September 1965

Gold Star Studios, LA

Philles Records #130

Engineer: Larry Levine

Arranger: Perry Botkin, Jr

Spector teamed with Gerry Goffin and Carole King to write this Righteous Brothers hit.

When asked why he chose to produce this song Spector replied, éBecause it seemed anyone (Al Hibbler & Roy Hamilton) who ever had a hit with 'Unchained Melody', also had a hit with 'Ebb Tide'". Spector proved to be right when this recording reached #5 in the U.S. charts and top 10 in the U.K..
